Parenting Stages

The Three Stages of Parenting

Parenting can be understood through three primary stages: the dependent stage, the interdependent stage, and the independent stage.

Dependent Stage (0-2 years):
In this stage, children are completely dependent on their parents for all their needs. From birth to around two years old, they rely heavily on parental support and care. During this time, it’s crucial to provide them with love, security, and the basics of life, as they are not yet capable of doing anything for themselves.

Interdependent Stage (2-22 years):
This stage can be broken down into two parts:

  1. Early Interdependence (2-12 years): As children grow, they begin to develop more independence, starting to walk, climb, and do simple tasks by themselves. These years are formative, often referred to as the “cement setting time,” where the foundation of their behavior and character is laid. It’s a critical period for teaching obedience, proper behavior, and instilling a sense of right and wrong. During this phase, parents should focus on shaping their hearts, guiding them towards godly principles.
  2. Later Interdependence (12-22 years): During these years, children continue to mature and gain more independence, though they are not yet fully independent. They need guidance and support as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and early adulthood. Parents should continue to teach, pray, and hope that their children will come to know God, recognizing the necessity of spiritual rebirth and growth.

Independent Stage (22+ years):
This final stage marks the time when children become fully independent and capable of taking care of themselves. While some may reach this stage before the age of 22, it generally represents the period when they leave home and start their own lives.

Throughout these stages, the ultimate goal is to nurture children in such a way that they grow into responsible, God-fearing adults. Parents should continually pray for their children’s spiritual growth and support them through each developmental stage.
