Shows Main Idea – How would you describe Christian discipleship? Or biblical counseling? If someone were to ask you for the core components of soul care, what would you tell them? In this podcast, I articulate the four primary themes that make up the why and the how of our soul care practices.

Christological Ideas

Christological – A Christ-centered view of soul care, or discipleship.

Grace – Everything we do is because of God’s grace, as He empowers us to help others.

Anthropology – The Lord calls humans to be part of what He’s doing in the lives of others.

Methodology – Our responsibility is a secondary cause, as we submit humbly and gladly to the primary cause of all things, the Lord.

Compassion – Christian discipleship is not discipleship if you do it without tears.

Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. – Acts 20:31

Jesus wept. – John 11:35

Competence – Disciplers are always involved in continuing education as they are learning how to bring God’s Word to the lives of others.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2:15

I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. – Romans 15:14

Philosophy – A way of thinking about the core components of every discipleship context.

Exaltation of Christ – He is the centerpiece of all our discipleship endeavors. He’s the beginning and end. He’s the one we point others to so they have a clear goal for transformation.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was’ in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. – Philippians 2:5-11

Centrality Of the Heart – If a person is going to experience long-term, sustainable change, the heart must be the starting point.

For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. – Luke 6:43-45

And to be renewed in the spirit of your minds. – Ephesians 4:23
